On Sunday, October 12, 2025, the Houston Chronicle reported that Judge DaSean Jones, who previously presided over the 180th District Court in Harris County, resigned from his position. His departure, announced in September without a specific explanation, created a vacancy that has since been filled by Tami Pierce, appointed by Governor Greg Abbott.

Jones’s resignation comes after a contentious period following the 2022 election, where he narrowly secured his seat with a 449-vote lead over Republican challenger Tami Pierce. The election results were challenged by Pierce in civil court, leading to a judge ruling that over 1,400 votes should not have been counted, effectively granting Pierce a new election.

Jones appealed this decision, and at the time of his resignation, the appeal was still pending before a Texas appellate court. He has since requested the appellate court to dismiss the appeal. Prior to his resignation, Jones had sought donations for his re-election campaign through social media.

DaSean Jones assumed office in 2019. Following his resignation, his campaign website has been deactivated. Public records indicate that Jones has transitioned into private practice, establishing a firm specializing in personal injury, employment law, and lawyer misconduct cases. However, as of the report, he has no active cases assigned to him within the Harris County court system.

Pierce, the newly appointed judge, has already commenced her duties in the 180th District Court and is reportedly gathering signatures for the 2026 election to retain the seat.
