On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, WKU Public Radio reported that Judy Vance Murphy, a circuit court judge in Kentucky’s 29th Judicial Circuit, has been suspended due to misconduct. The suspension was enacted by the Kentucky Judicial Conduct Commission following an investigation that revealed Judge Murphy had abused her judicial position.

The investigation found that in 2023, she intervened in a personal matter involving her daughter’s boyfriend and his mother, which raised concerns about her impartiality. Additionally, from 2017 to 2021, Judge Murphy reportedly discussed ongoing cases with individuals who were not part of those proceedings, undermining the integrity and independence of the judiciary.

Further allegations included her use of a personal cell phone during court sessions for non-judicial matters, which affected her attention to the cases at hand and created an impression of impropriety. In a troubling admission, Judge Murphy also allowed a suspended attorney to sign an affidavit asserting that she was not perceived as vindictive, despite the attorney’s status.

Judge Murphy acknowledged the validity of all accusations and chose to waive further hearings. As a result, she has received a 14-day suspension without pay and is required to withdraw from any cases involving the suspended attorney. Her suspension will remain in effect until November 25, 2024, during which time she is prohibited from accessing her judicial office at the Casey County Judicial Center or any other related offices.
